The Beggar And The Child

Happy first of December each…It’s not far until Christmas and I’m acting like a ‘lil child again, hehehe, or should I say ho-ho-ho…Sometimes I wonder if we’re here to be tested, so I decided to do another poem for Christmas, hence…The Beggar And The Child…Hope you enjoy…Have a wonderful week my friends…Don’t go into too much debt this Christmas as it’s the love from the heart which really counts and I know you have plenty of that…Sweet dreams, much love and hugs always… xxx Lynn xxx

The Beggar And The Child

A man laid down on Christmas Eve
In a mere cardboard box for his bed
His blankets made from old newspapers
And his nose was a deep crimson red
He smiles when he thinks about a girl
Which he bumped into earlier that day
When he was out begging for his food
He listened to what she had to say!

"Mummy look at that beggar man!
He’s asking for coins to get his meal
Why can’t the people see him there?
I wonder if they know how hurt he feels!
Could he be a ghost from Christmas past
Or maybe just an Angel without wings?
Let us try to give him some help
As Christmas is a time for sharing things!”

The Mother smiles and opens her arms
Then she hugs her child with delight,
It made her stop and think to herself
She whispers, “Darling, you’re so right!”
She wishes everyone could feel the same
Then she crouches down to where he sat
She reaches for the last note in her purse
And she places it with LOVE onto his lap!

That very night the stranger disappears
As his work on Earth had been done
He met up with the Lord at Heaven’s Gate
And his wings and halo really shone!
He says “This time my work was GOOD
As two more mortals passed the test!
They found the time for a poor beggar man
So there’s bound to be hope for all the REST!"

If only! one act, Lyn it has to be continuous, to gain what others promise will be reward for showing generosity and simply being honest,
My parents worked in Salvation Army hostels where you could meet many men
who preferred the streets because they rejected rules and objectives,
I wonder how many will be waiting outside "the gates" still begging to be selected?

You have done it again, sob, sob.  It seems so sad that there are so few people that notice this beggar, even sadder that we give to down and out and charities more at xmas. Love you always Nessa

Ooh, nice poem. Interesting rythmic devices that seem to counterpoint the surrealism of the undrlying metaphor. :)

My Dear Lynn: I am so glad that I heard from you as I couldn’t find you. Oh gosh, I was reading your poem and listening to Alison Krause singing and the big tears are running down my eyes, this really touched me because that is how I wish we all could treat each other, with kindness and sharing. You poetry gives me such pleasure that I am adding you to my favorites. God bless you dear……………Rusty ((HUGS))

What a wonderful and beautiful poem. It reminds me a little of the Happy Prince by Oscar Wilde and you’ve managed to convey this so wonderfully in just a few lines. Have you ever read "Mr God, This is Anna" again it’s a story about how the message of love is on the streets.
